Public Transportation in Berlin
Your Ultimate Guide to Public Transport in Berlin – Navigate the City with Ease!
Welcome to Berlin! One of the best and most convenient ways to explore the city is via its excellent public transport system, primarily operated by the BVG company. The system is efficient, clean, and covers almost every corner. Here is everything you need to know:
🚆 Types of Public Transport
One transport ticket is valid for all the following modes of travel:
-
U-Bahn (Underground/Subway): A fast and convenient system that reaches most central city areas.
-
S-Bahn (Overground/Commuter Rail): A rapid train often used as a circular route (Ringbahn) around the city centre and connecting to more distant areas.
-
Tram (Streetcar): Operates mainly in former East Berlin, offering a pleasant way to travel between neighbourhoods.
-
Bus: Hundreds of lines covering all parts of the city, including night buses.
-
Fähre (Ferries): Several public boat lines on the Spree River and surrounding lakes—a unique experience!
🗺️ Fare Zones (Where Can You Go?)
Berlin is divided into three fare zones:
-
Zone A: The inner city core, including all stations within the S-Bahn ring (the "Ring").
-
Zone B: Outside the S-Bahn ring up to the city limits of Berlin.
-
Zone C: The greater Berlin area, including nearby cities like Potsdam and the BER Airport (Brandeburg).
Most tourists will only need an AB Zone ticket, as the majority of tourist attractions are located there. If you're traveling to the airport or Potsdam, you will need an ABC ticket.
